A small farming village between two lakes

Alvie is a small village in the Colac Otway Shire, postcode 3249, about 12 km north-west of Colac. It had 141 people at the 2021 census. The village sits on farmland between Lake Colac, which is fresh water, and Lake Corangamite, which is a large salt lake. Nearby Red Rock Reserve has old volcanic craters and lookouts over both lakes.

Alvie has a primary school, a hall and a sports oval, but most shops and services are in Colac. Nearby places include Cororooke, Coragulac, Warrion and Wool Wool.

Country moves need a clear plan and a written quote

A country move has more steps than a city move. The drive between homes, the driveway and the size of your house all change how long the job takes. That’s why we ask about these things before we quote. You get a fixed written quote, so you know the full price before you book.

Share your preferred date and both addresses, and we’ll plan a schedule that fits the day.

Farm driveways, gravel roads and gates

Most of the land around Alvie is farmland. Many homes have gravel driveways, farm gates and paddocks close to the house. A removal truck is big and heavy, so the last part of the trip matters.

We ask how wide your gate is, what the driveway is made of and where the truck can park and turn. If a big truck won’t fit, we bring a smaller one or carry items a short distance. Photos make this quick to sort out.

Open plains and changing weather

Alvie sits on open volcanic plains, with little shelter from wind. Strong wind makes it harder to carry large items like mattresses and table tops, and rain can turn a gravel or dirt driveway soft. If the forecast looks bad, we’ll talk with you a few days before about a backup date.

Family homes and where people move

Most homes in Alvie are separate houses, and many have three or more bedrooms. That means plenty of beds, wardrobes and outdoor furniture to move. Some people move from Alvie into Colac for work or school, while others move out to the country for more space. If your new home isn’t ready, we offer storage, and we can help with packing and unpacking.

Moving Problems We Help Alvie Families Avoid

Most problems on a country move start with a small detail that wasn’t shared early.

The load is bigger than expected. Large family homes often hold more than people think, especially in spare rooms and sheds. List every room, and we’ll pick the right truck size the first time.

A soft driveway after rain. Gravel and dirt tracks can turn muddy near the house. Send us a photo of the driveway, and keep a backup date in mind if heavy rain is forecast.

Farm gates and stock. On a working farm, some gates must stay shut. Tell us the rules when you book, so the crew knows what to do on the day.

Beds and wardrobes that won’t fit through the door. Older farmhouses often have narrow doors and hallways. Our team takes apart beds and large furniture and puts them back together at your new home.

Packing left too late. Boxes and packing supplies are not sold in Alvie itself. Get your supplies early from Colac, or ask us to bring them for you.
