In 1885, the Melbourne Hunt Club leased land here, having moved from Caulfield once game had been driven out there, and established a genuine deer park for hunting on the property. By 1899, the school, the railway station, and the village had all adopted the Deer Park name, replacing the older Kororoit Creek title entirely. The Hunt Club's old building still stands today, now a community arts centre.

A suburb that lost three-quarters of its land

Deer Park's boundaries have shifted dramatically in recent decades. In 1998, the area south of what's now Foleys Road was carved off and became the separate suburb of Derrimut. Four years later, the former explosives reserve to the north-east was detached to form Cairnlea. Between the two changes, Deer Park lost roughly three-quarters of its original area.

The suburb's namesake creek still runs through Deer Park today, with an extensive linear reserve and walking trails along it.
