Spotswood takes its name from John Stewart Spottiswoode, who purchased land here in 1841. His daughter later married Richard Seddon, who became Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the nearby suburb of Seddon is named after him.

It's a genuine link between two suburbs in this part of Melbourne, one carrying the father's name, the other the son-in-law's.

A station renamed three times in under thirty years

Spotswood's railway station opened in 1878 as Edom, became Bayswater in 1881, changed again to Spottiswoode later that same year, and only settled on Spotswood in 1905, roughly matching when the suburb itself finalised its own name.

That's an unusually unsettled naming history for a Melbourne station.

Basalt, harvesters, and a landmark pumping station

Spotswood's flat, basalt-rich land made it a real industrial centre from the 1890s. The Robinson and Company implement factory, built on Hall Street in 1891-92, was one of Australia's largest agricultural implement makers until H.V. McKay's Sunshine harvester works overtook it.

Around the same period, the suburb was chosen as the site for a major pumping station in Melbourne's new sewerage system, close to the river and built on stable basalt ground. That 1897 pumping station, with its distinctive polychrome brick engine houses, is heritage-listed and now forms the site of Scienceworks Museum.
