Moving in Aberfeldy: What Makes It Different

Expert Movers is a removalist team with 10+ years in the industry, more than 5,000 completed moves and a 4.9★ average rating from 200+ customer reviews, which you're welcome to read before you book. Moving house in Aberfeldy is nothing like a suburban move, so we plan it differently. Here's how.

A remote mountain locality

Aberfeldy is a tiny locality in the Shire of Baw Baw, in the far north-east of the shire above Thomson Dam, with only 7 people at the 2021 census. It sits on Mount Lookout in the Great Dividing Range, on the ridge between the Thomson and Aberfeldy Rivers.

It started as a gold-mining township and once had around 500 residents. Today there are very few, so there are no local shops, no depot and no kerbside parking close by. A job here is planned around the property and the road, and we give you the full price up front.

The coldest place in Victoria

By mean maximum temperature, Aberfeldy is the coldest locality in Victoria and on the Australian mainland. For a move, that's more than a fun fact. Frost and ice can make forest and mountain roads slippery, and short winter days leave less time to finish.

If you're moving in the cooler months, tell us your date early. We'll plan an early start and talk through a backup date if the forecast looks bad. We won't put a loaded truck on an icy road to hit a deadline.

Mountain and forest roads

The roads into Aberfeldy are mountain and forest roads, such as the Walhalla-Woods Point Road. A long removal truck doesn't suit every stretch of a narrow or winding road. So we ask about the last part of the trip to your property: the surface, the width, the slope, any gates and any low branches.

If a big truck isn't a good fit, we can use a smaller one, or plan a longer carry from the nearest point where the truck can stop safely. A photo or short video of the road in is the fastest way to settle this.

Nearby towns

The nearest places for supplies and services are Erica, Rawson, Walhalla and, further out, Moe and Warragul. Erica, Rawson and Walhalla sit in the foothills of the Baw Baw Plateau, and Walhalla is a historic town with many holiday properties. If you're moving a holiday cabin, a bush block or a permanent home in this country, we cover both directions, so tell us where the other end of the move is.

Packing and storage before moving day

With no shops nearby, it helps to have everything ready before we arrive. We supply packing materials and can pack and unpack for you. If your next place isn't ready, we also offer storage. You can read more on our packing and storage pages.

Common Problems We See During Aberfeldy Moves

These are the issues that cause trouble on remote mountain moves. Most are solved with a short message before the day.

The timing wasn't planned for remote roads. A mountain job needs more time at each end, and short winter days make that tighter. Tell us your preferred date and we'll plan an early start.

The road is wrong for a big truck. A narrow, steep or unsealed stretch can stop a long truck. Send photos of the road in and the gate, and we'll pick a truck that fits.

Winter surprises. Ice, frost and snow-melt change a mountain road overnight. Book with a backup date in mind, and check the forecast with us a few days before.

Not being able to reach each other. Mobile reception can be patchy in forest country. Agree a meeting point and a backup phone number before moving day.

A quote that left out the call-out charge. Some companies add it after the job. Ours varies by suburb, and it's in your final quote before you book.

Aberfeldy Moving Checklist

Use this plan to get ready. It's in the order we'd do it.

1. Pick your season. Summer and autumn are easier on mountain roads. If you must move in winter, add a backup date.
2. Photograph the way in. Take photos of the last stretch of road, the gate and the driveway.
3. List everything, including outbuildings. Include sheds, decks and outdoor furniture.
4. Send a map pin and two phone numbers. We'll use them to find you and to stay in touch if reception drops.
5. Decide on packing and storage. Book them in advance, since nothing is close by.
6. Check the forecast three days before. Call us if frost, ice or heavy rain is expected.
7. Plan an early start. Mountain roads need daylight at both ends of the job.

Moving Costs in Aberfeldy

We charge by the hour for the truck and two movers, and you get the final total in a fixed written quote before you commit. Our rates are $130 an hour for a 3 tonne truck, $140 for a 4.5 tonne, $180 for an 8 tonne and $200 for a 10 tonne.

Why is an Aberfeldy quote higher than a suburban quote? Because it's a remote job. A call-out charge applies for areas like Aberfeldy. It varies by suburb, and we include it in your written quote, so you see one final number. There are no hidden fees and no extra charges afterwards.

If you're comparing removalist prices Aberfeldy customers are offered, or looking at budget movers Aberfeldy has access to, ask each company for the final total in writing, including the call-out charge and any minimum hours. If you're after affordable movers Aberfeldy locals can rely on, a quote that shows everything up front is the best sign. When you compare moving quotes Aberfeldy and moving costs Aberfeldy residents are given, compare the totals. The hourly rate alone doesn't tell you the cost.

Moving Services in Aberfeldy

We provide door to door moving services: we load at your property, unload at the new one and handle packing and storage in between. We focus on household moves, not farm machinery or livestock. We can help with:

• House removalists: cottages, cabins and family homes, with the right truck for the road
• Furniture removalists: sofas, beds, wardrobes and dining sets, with disassembly and reassembly
• Single item removalists: one fridge, one lounge or one cabinet
• Piano and pool table removalists for heavy pieces
• Packing and unpacking and storage

On the day, our crew wraps furniture in blankets and shrink wrap and straps it on the truck, which matters on winding mountain roads. You can also see all the areas we service.
