Derrimut (VIC 3026) sits 17km west of Melbourne's CBD, in the City of Brimbank, bounded by Foleys Road to the north, Robinsons Road to the west, the Western Ring Road to the east, and Boundary Road to the south. Home to around 8,651 people, it's one of the newest suburbs on the map, only split off from Deer Park in 1998.

Named after a real person, not a place

Derrimut takes its name from a Boon Wurrung headman who lived from around 1810 to 1864. He's remembered for warning early white settlers, twice, about planned attacks, which made him well known in colonial Melbourne. His portrait was painted in Hobart in 1837 by artist Benjamin Duterau. A parish carried his name years before the suburb existed, and his headstone still stands in Melbourne General Cemetery today.

It's a genuinely important piece of local history sitting behind a name most people drive past without a second thought.

A suburb still finding its feet

Derrimut only became its own suburb in 1998, carved out of what used to be the southern part of Deer Park. That makes it genuinely young by Melbourne standards, still building its own identity apart from its bigger neighbour. Interestingly, part of the area was once home to the University of Melbourne's "Mount Derrimut" farm research station, which ran from 1964 right up until 1996, just before the suburb was formed.

No train station, but solid road access

Derrimut doesn't have its own railway station, so locals rely on nearby Deer Park station on the Ararat line, plus bus route 400 running from Sunshine Station through to Laverton Station via Robinsons Road. What the suburb does have is strong road access, Mt Derrimut Road runs right through the middle, and the Deer Park Bypass connects straight to both the Western Freeway and the Western Ring Road.

Derrimut Village, the local hub

Derrimut Village Shopping Centre is the suburb's main shopping spot, and it pulls decent local traffic, especially on weekends. If your move is nearby, we'll time it around the busiest shopping hours instead of driving straight into them.
